What is reflexology?

The art of reflexology dates back to ancient Egypt, India and China.
The therapy was introduced to the west in the early 1900s, when Dr. William Fitzgerald developed 'zone therapy'. He belived that reflex areas on the hands and feet were linked to corresponding areas and organs of the body within the same zone.

In the 1930s, Eunice Ingham further developed this zone theory into what we now recognise as modern Reflexology.

Put simply, Reflexology is a deep healing foot treatment that's really so much more than just a massage.

It has many benefits which could include:

- Helping relaxation
- Encouraging the body to heal
- Releasing tension and encouaraging stress relief
- Improving the immune system
- Helping with seasonal allergies
- Encouraging better circulation
- Improving bowel movement
- Helping the body eliminate waste by clearing it of toxins
- Improving nerve stimulation
- Relieving pain
- Improving sleep
- Support during menopause
- Balancing hormones
- Increasing the feeling of wellbeing

How Reflexology works

There are over 7000 nerve endings on each foot, so working on the feet can trigger a relaxation response. Reflexology also increases circulation which can help to support the body down to a cellular level.

Reflexology focuses on the balancing, calming or stimulation of reflexes using only pressure by fingers, thumbs and knuckles.

Reflexology cannot diagnose or claim to cure medical conditions.

So how is it an art?

The art of Reflexology lies within the skill and sensitivity of the practitioner. Being able to feel the quality of each reflex point, being able to hold points without causing pain trauma (that tightens the body up again), sometimes for long periods with a subtle but firm pressure, is a great skill that takes sensitivity and care.

How often should I get Reflexology?

How often you attend Reflexology depends entirely on what you want to achieve through your treatment. If you have a specific issue, and you find that Reflexology works for you, you may feel that weekly sessions at first is best, until you start to feel the benefits, after which you may only need monthly treatments.

Many people use Reflexology to help them relax and unwind, and have a bit of time out for themselves. In this case, monthly treatment will propbably be enough but you should book an appointment as and when you feel your body needs it.
